The ESV & the Standard Bible Society

The Standard Bible Society . . .

. . . exists to reach the world with the Gospel and God’s Word through the distribution and promotion of the English Standard Version (ESV) Bible throughout the English-speaking world.

The SBS is a separate not-for-profit [IRS Sec. 501 (c) (3)] organization, growing out of the vision and mission of Good News Publishers/Crossway Books and Bibles, which is also a not-for-profit [IRS Sec. 501 (c) (3)] organization.

Does anyone know anything else about the SBS, particularly related to why their focus in only on the English Speaking world?

Last time I checked, there were around 6900 languages other than English. Why only the ESV and why only English?

The Canadian Bible Society: “Our vision is to reach every man, woman and child with the life-giving Word of God, and to encourage its use.”

The International Bible Society (now Biblica): “We translate the Bible into world languages that have 1 million or more speakers. We distribute the Bible—and evangelism and discipleship literature—to people who might never learn about Christ any other way.”

So why does the Standard Bible Society 1) limit itself only to English and 2) only to the ESV?

Maybe I’ll e-mail them and ask?

They want to get a tax break on their loss leading marketing strategy. If they new Christians and those hoping to evangelize free bibles, they can sell them up later to the more expensive study bibles, journaling bibles etc.

Churches will use the free bibles in their evangelism and then hopefully for Crossway eventually adopt it as their Sunday morning reading text.

Who needs other languages, given that God gave us the ESV in ENGLISH? ;-)
