Bulgarian Integrity – Or Why you shouldn’t make stupid statements about languages.

We don’t see these sorts of comments as often as we used to in Biblical Studies – something that says a lot about the impact that James Barr had on our discipline.

With that said, we still do have and use a 10 volume set of word studies that essentially does something very similar to what is criticized in this Language Log Post. Basically, a certain man in the European Union made a stupid statement about what a person can and cannot say in Bulgarian.

It is exactly because of the claim criticized and corrected in that post that we should be careful when we pick up books like Theological Dictionary of the New Testament. They’re full of this kind of stuff and other related fallacies.

  1. Mike, I don’t think you’ll find the word intergrity in most, if not all, English dictionaries either ;-))))) Although Google does provide 182,000 examples.

  2. No, you’re not along, that’s for certain! Happy New Year!! I wonder how you say that in Bulgarian? честита нова година. Google comes through again.
